Mrs. Jennifer Schelp-Gomez will be joining our school family as Oak Mountain Academy’s new Dean of Middle School and Spanish Teacher, beginning July 1, 2020. Mrs. Schelp is a native of San Juan, Puerto Rico, but considers Carrollton, Georgia her home. Over the course of Mrs. Schelp’s 13-year career at Carrollton Junior High School, she has been recognized as an outstanding educational leader many times over including; being named the 2018-2019 Teacher of the Year, the 2018-2019 Life Changer of the Year Nominee, 2007-2015 CJHS Teacher of the Year Nominee, and 2013, 2014, 2015, and 2017 Honored Teacher Award Recipient. Additionally, 100% of Mrs. Schelp’s students who have completed Spanish I have scored “high-growth”, comparing SLO pre-assessment to the final SLO assessment.
In addition to serving as a Spanish teacher at a variety of levels, Mrs. Schelp has served the GovernorÂ’s Honors Program as a language interviewer and writing assessor at the state level. She has also served as the Spanish SLO Developer for the Georgia Department of Education. For InterAmerican University (IAU), Mrs. Schelp served as the President of the Graduate Class and IAU Student Council Representative for three consecutive years. In addition to her classroom responsibilities at Carrollton Junior High School, Mrs. Schelp also served as the Connections Team Leader for four years, the Connections Curriculum Coordinator for seven years, and as a School Governance Team Representative. Mrs. Schelp is an active member of the Foreign Language Association of Georgia (FLAG) and the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL).
With over a dozen years of professional, educational experience which includes teaching, leadership, and mentorship, Mrs. Schelp is well-poised to lead Oak Mountain Academy’s Middle School Division. “Education is a vocation that requires genuine servitude. I am blessed with this opportunity to serve Oak Mountain Academy middle school students, faculty, and families,” states Schelp. When Mr. Yuran was asked about the Dean Search Committee’s decision to hire Mrs. Schelp, he responded “Mrs. Schelp was a standout from the beginning of the process. When she met with the middle school committee during the early rounds of interviews it was clear that she had a special way of connecting with people. Her authentic ability to build relationships paired with her educational leadership and instructional expertise will be a beautiful match for Oak Mountain Academy.”
In order to welcome Mrs. Schelp, OMA will be hosting a Meet-N-Greet for her in the Middle School Solarium on Tuesday, February 18th from 3 to 4 p.m. We look forward to you joining us as we officially welcome and celebrate Mrs. SchelpÂ’s arrival to The Mountain.
