The Villa Rica Police DepartmentÂ’s interstate crime unit may soon be equipped with a new tag reading system designed to scan every license plate and alert officers of any potential criminal issue related to the car or its owner.
“It helps us be knowledgeable about which vehicles have been across the border, vehicles that have been used where children are missing and human trafficking. So it is a lot more robust system and it will help us a lot in that area,” said Chief Michael Mansour, explaining potential benefits of the readers to city council last week. “Every other tag reader that is on the system will report back to us. It will also give us tips on vehicles that the Feds may have put out, saying this vehicle has been seen. We can stop it if there are drugs or money involved, stuff like that.”
Mansour said the $14,000 price tag for the product would be paid for through money seized in drug arrests.
