Cleek To Step Down As Head Wrestling Coach At CHS

CARROLLTON, GA — With seven seasons under his belt and countless hours spent pouring into student-athletes, Michael Cleek has made the decision to step down as head wrestling coach at Carrollton High School.

Cleek began his coaching career more than two decades ago when he coached football in Alabama after graduating college.

After moving to Georgia. in 2002, he started coaching football and wrestling at Carroll County Schools. He came to Carrollton City Schools in 2016.

Michael Cleek will be stepping back as the head wrestling coach at Carrollton High School.

“ I have so many great moments to look back on here at Carrollton,” said Cleek. “I am proud of each of my wrestlers. But, there are a few memories that really stick out. One is our 2018 dual victory over Woodland in the area duals to make the state duals. The second is our victory over Cass to make the state duals tournament in 2020.”

His career duals record is 398-171 and he had 17 state finalists including six state champions.

CHS Athletic Director Paul Fitz-Simons said Cleek has been an asset to the wrestling program during his time as head coach.

“Coach Cleek has been instrumental in the success of the wrestling program for the past seven years,” he said. “He has invested into many students and families building a championship culture with six athletes securing state championships during that time. I know he will continue to do great things for our students in his role as a teacher in our school district.

Cleek went on to share another memory that stands out in his mind.

“My son Ben grew up in every wrestling room and gym I ever coached in. Seeing him go out at this year’s area duals against Alexander and win and seeing his team and our fans all pulling for him was special. I knew two things — all the years were worth it and Carrollton is our home.”

Cleek decided to step back to focus on teaching and spending time with his family. Coach Nick White, who has worked alongside coach Cleek as co-head coach, will resume as head coach where he will continue growing and developing the program.
