Lane closures continued on I-20 in Carroll and Haralson counties over the weekend.
The Georgia Department of Transportation worked on two projects on the stretch of highway. On top of the repaving of both the east and west bound lanes, construction crews are also rehabbing 11 bridges on I-20, said GDOT communications officer, Mohammad Arafa, “They were in fair condition but they needed rehabilitation to preserve the integrity of the structure.”
Atlanta media had reported last week that paving on I-20 would be paused due to safety concerns. However, Arafa said there will be no delay in construction but DOT crews have widened the shoulders by two feet for safety purposes.
“We just changed the way that we proceed with the project. Instead of working on the pavement first and then paving the shoulder, we are switching to paving the shoulder and widening them by two feet. When they are used for traffic while we are working on the pavement, it will be safer,” said Arafa.
Eight fatalities caused by collisions have been reported on that stretch of highway since construction started 18 months ago.
