UWG earns recognition for enrollment growth at Board of Regents meeting

by Miranda Hodges

The University of West Georgia continues to set the standard in enrollment excellence, earning the prestigious Chancellor’s Cup for the fifth consecutive semester – this time under new, more rigorous evaluation criteria introduced by the University System of Georgia (USG).

Announced during this month’s Board of Regents meeting, USG Chancellor Sonny Perdue shared an update to the methodology behind the Chancellor’s Cup, shifting the focus from student headcount to a Full-Time Equivalent (FTE) model to prioritize on-time degree completion.

Even under this more stringent formula, UWG stood out once again as the fastest-growing university in Georgia’s comprehensive sector, with an FTE enrollment increase of 8.7% over Spring 2024. This achievement follows a fall semester in which UWG achieved its highest enrollment ever

“This recognition means that our efforts to attract students to UWG, and then retain them, are working,” said Dr. Ashwani Monga, interim president of UWG. “Our academic offerings and other experiences encourage students to stay at UWG, graduate successfully, and contribute meaningfully to our region. While undergraduate students continue to be the major portion of our enrollment numbers, we also take pride in how our graduate students – particularly those in the College of Education – are driving this continued growth in enrollment.”

The award highlights UWG’s strategic enrollment momentum, propelled by initiatives designed to enhance the student experience and improve academic progress. From elevated campus amenities to a focus on high-impact learning opportunities, UWG’s student-centered approach continues to attract, retain and support learners at every stage of their journey.

“Everything we do is grounded in a holistic approach that supports each student’s educational journey, from the moment they consider becoming a Wolf to the day they graduate,” said Dr. Shanna Widener, interim vice president for strategic enrollment management. “This recognition affirms that we’re not just growing. We’re growing with purpose.”

The recognition also reflects the sustained impact of UWG’s innovative programs, including the Go West Early dual enrollment initiative and academic pathways that respond to workforce needs. As enrollment climbs, UWG is also emphasizing full-time credit loads to help more students graduate on time.
