The University of West Georgia’s Fall Class of 2024 stood proudly on the summit of a determined journey during UWG’s commencement ceremonies this weekend.

Interim President Dr. Ashwani Monga celebrated the scholars’ remarkable contributions to UWG’s success, noting record-breaking enrollment numbers of nearly 14,400 students and more than 1,100 degree conferrals.

“The degree that you are receiving is so much more than just a piece of paper or a line on your résumé,” he said. “It is evidence of your intellect and expertise, and proof of your drive and determination. When you leave today with a degree under your belt, leave with the confidence that you have the intellect to master any new knowledge that the world may throw at you, and leave with the self-belief that you have the drive to overcome any challenges that may come your way.”

The Graduate School kicked off the commemorations on Friday evening at 6 p.m. The festivities continued Saturday, starting at 10 a.m. with undergrads from the Richards College of Business; the College of Education; the School of Communication, Film and Media; and University College.

 At 2 p.m. Saturday, the spotlight shifted to the graduates of the College of Humanities, Arts, and Social Sciences; Dr. James ‘Earl’ Perry College of Mathematics, Computing, and Sciences; and the Tanner Health System School of Nursing, as they marked the culmination of their academic progress. All three ceremonies were live-streamed and are archived online.

Christopher Sanders ’03, chair of the Alumni Association’s Board of Directors, captured the spirit of this moment during his address at the ceremony. 

“Today is the day you look back on what it took for you to get here,” Sanders said. “For many graduates, your journey was marked by challenges—from being the first in your families to earn a degree to balancing academic pursuits with military service. Yet, those struggles have molded you into stronger, more resilient individuals.”

Student Government Association President Chase Williams followed, echoing this theme of resilience and growth in his address to the class. Williams reflected on the unique challenges faced by the Class of 2024.

“Many of you came to college right as the world was in a time of uncertainty, and with that, you have all witnessed a ton of different changes in both the world and in your own lives during your time here at UWG,” he said. “As you go forward in life, always remember, UWG is a community that will always support and be a part of your life.”

A special video highlighting the graduates’ journeys was played, featuring them reading heartfelt letters from their loved ones, filled with congratulations and messages of support. Encouragement from loved ones played a crucial role in the graduates’ journeys, setting the foundation for this achievement that will positively alter their lives.

Monga also noted the significant financial impact of a UWG degree, with bachelor’s degrees boosting lifetime earnings by $1.4 million—and even more for those earning advanced degrees.

“By earning your degree, you’ve transformed the trajectory of your own life and created greater opportunities for future generations in your family,” Monga said.

As Sanders welcomed them into the Alumni Association, he reminded them of the enduring bond they share with their alma mater. 

“Your degree connects us all,” Sanders said. “Wear your alumni pin with pride because now you are Forever West.”
