(Tallapoosa, GA) – The City of Tallapoosa City Council has voted in favor of purchasing a building located at 2040 US Highway 78— a building that will become home to the Tallapoosa Police Department headquarters.
The council authorized the purchase of the building during a special called meeting. The city will use American Rescue Plan Act dollars for the buy.
While additional money will be needed to upgrade, the city anticipates overall expenses will be significantly less than the estimated $450,000.00 cost to construct a brand-new building for police headquarters, according to City Manager Philip Eidson.
Originally built as a bank in 1974, it previously operated as an office and payment center for Georgia Power. The first floor has five offices, a large open lobby, and a breakroom with a kitchen. A fully furnished basement with a kitchen and a large open room will be used for classroom instruction.
The 5,100 square ft building located on a 1.43-acre lot meets many of the needs of the police department according to Police Chief Scott Worthy.
The city also plans to receive bids to do minor upgrades to the facility. Until that happens, precise estimates on how much it will cost to upgrade the building remain uncertain.
The current home to the Tallapoosa Police Department at 15 East Alabama Street will be demolished and then paved for additional parking for city hall and downtown.
