“A man is dead after being shot at Clifty Falls State Park in Indiana.
According to DNR Law Enforcement, officials were called to an area near the north gate of Clifty Falls near Madison, Indiana, around 2:48 p.m. Wednesday for a shooting.
They said many people in the area called 911.
When they arrived, they found Joseph Renee Lane, 47, of Carrollton, Georgia, with a gunshot wound to the chest.
“It’s just not typical here,” Officer Josh Thomas, Indiana Department of Natural Resources, said. “Most of the time, people come to Clifty Falls State Park to walk. The trails are pretty incredible. It’s just a family atmosphere, so it was a contained incident that doesn’t typically happen here.”
A suspect, John Dean McElwaney, 33, of Tallapoosa, Georgia, was booked into jail early Thursday morning for voluntary manslaughter. Law enforcement says they are committed to keeping the park safe.
” That’s what it’s there for, and we’re just there to protect that and make sure they’re all safe,” Thomas said.
Indiana DNR and Jefferson County law enforcement are investigating.“
