Overview:
Several rounds of strong to severe thunderstorms and heavy rainfall are possible today through late Wednesday as multiple storm systems make their way across the southeast. In general, the primary hazard will be widespread damaging wind gusts, with several tornadoes also possible, primarily across Central and Southern Alabama and Central Georgia. Wednesday’s severe threat is highly dependent on timing of frontal passage and development of prefrontal storms.
- The Enhanced Risk (3/5) for today has been expanded northward closer to I-20 and to encompass nearly all of central and southern Alabama and central and southern Georgia.
- Areas of increased risk for a significant (EF2+) tornado and increased potential for damaging winds were added across portions of south central Georgia
- The Enhanced Risk (3/5) for tomorrow has been trimmed back to the I-85 corridor in west central Georgia and includes all of east Alabama.
Today
- Showers and numerous thunderstorms are expected to develop by mid-morning and make their way eastward across the area.
- Storms will begin to enter east Alabama between 8 and 10 am and north and central Georgia from the west between 9 and 11 AM
- The strongest portion of the storm system should clear the area between 3 and 5 pm
- There is a risk of severe storms for much of east Alabama and north and central Georgia, with highest potential south of I-20.
- Primary Hazards
- Damaging winds (see Severe Wind Probability Graphic attached)
- Tornadoes, some of which may be strong (see Tornado Probability attached)
- Isolated large hail
- Flooding, especially in areas that see continued redevelopment of storms
- 1-2″ of rain expected, with locally higher amounts possible.
- Periods of heavy rainfall will lead to an increased risk of flooding in creeks and streams and localized flash flooding.
Wednesday (4/6)
- Showers and thunderstorms are possible ahead of an approaching cold front. Coverage and intensity of storms will be dependent on
- **How today’s system evolves**
- Development of prefrontal showers and storms tomorrow
- Timing of frontal passage
- There is a risk for severe storms for east Alabama and all of north and central Georgia, with greatest potential along and north of the I-85 and I-20 corridors.
- Primary Hazards
- Damaging winds, especially in area outlined in the Enhanced Risk
- A couple isolated, weak tornadoes
- Isolated large hail
