Record Number Of CHS Students Head To Governor’s Honors

CARROLLTON, GA –Six Carrollton High School students – a record number – will be headed to Berry College in Rome this summer to participate in the prestigious Governor’s Honors program, while a seventh is an alternate who still may have the opportunity to attend.

The Governor’s Honors Program, known as GHP, is a four-week residential summer enrichment program, to be held this year June 19 through July 16, for gifted and talented rising high school juniors and seniors.  Students who attend public, private, and home schools are eligible for nomination in one of 20 subject areas.

Four current juniors achieved finalist status: Isabel Keller, Serena McGuinn, Ella Barden and Mark Zimmer. Two sophomores, Tyler Ou and Edward Kenyon, also were selected. Each earned the opportunity in specific areas of study: Isabel, Communicative Arts; Tyler and Serena, Dance; Ella and Edward, Science; and Mark, World Languages, specifically Spanish.

Isabelle Esslinger, a junior, is an alternate for Science. Alternates will be notified in May if a slot becomes available in their area of concentration, which for Isabelle is Chemistry.

“This is a life-changing opportunity for these students,” said CHS Principal Ian Lyle. “Governor’s Honors is an elite program and while Carrollton High School regularly has participation, this is an exceptional year. I’m extremely proud of them and look forward to what they bring back from their experiences.”

Carrollton High School has a strong legacy of producing GHP finalists. Three CHS students were selected for the program in 2012 and 2013, four in 2014, one in 2015, four in 2016, five in 2017, two in 2018, and one in 2019. No finalists were named in 2020 because of the COVID-19 pandemic. In 2021, current junior Walker Camp was a sole finalist.
