Carrollton woman charged w/ DUI and vehicular homicide relating to crash that killed boyfriend, injured sister

A Carroll County Grand Jury has charged a 24-year old Carrollton woman with first degree vehicular homicide and driving under the influence for her alleged role in a single-vehicle crash back in July of 2018 which resulted in the death of her boyfriend who was a passenger of the car she was driving.

Georgia State Patrol investigators believe a 2010 Ford Focus driven by Kaitlan Renee Lewis was traveling on Old Airport Road near the intersection with Frashier Road when the vehicle exited the left side of the roadway and came to an uncontrolled rest after colliding with multiple trees. Air bags in the vehicle did deploy, but all three in the car — including Lewis’ sister —suffered injury and were taken to hospitals. The address for all three occupants is listed as Frashier Road.

Front seat passenger, 36-year old Marcus Ferrell of Carrollton, died 12 days after the crash due to his injuries.

Witnesses to the accident claimed it appeared that someone jerked the steering wheel of the focus, causing it to leave the roadway.

At the scene of the crash, Lewis’ younger sister – who was seated in the back of the car at the time of the crash– told investigators she was not sure what caused the crash, but did say she “knew Marcus and Kaitlain were arguing and then the accident occurred,” according to the incident report.

While being treated at Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta, Lewis allegedly told investigators that she had been drinking and smoking marijuana. Investigators collected a sample of her blood.

According to an updated incident report, GBI Crime Lab results indicated a positive result for the presence of blood alcohol at a level of .112.

0.08 is the legal limit for adults over twenty-one years of age driving non-commercial vehicles in the state of Georgia. She was 22-years old at the time of the crash.

Lewis remains in the Carroll County Jail as of Thursday morning.
