Transforming lives:UWG ranked #1 regional university in Georgiafor social mobility

by Colton Campbell

The University of West Georgia continues to be recognized for providing students with a transformative education, most recently being named the No. 1 regional university in the state for social mobility.

U.S. News & World Report recently named UWG first in the state among regional comprehensive universities (third in Georgia overall) and 87th in the nation among top performers on the Social Mobility Index (SMI), which assesses the extent to which a college or university enrolls economically disadvantaged students and supports them toward graduation.

“This recognition affirms our dedication to transforming lives through education,” said Dr. Michael Johnson, UWG’s president. “At the University of West Georgia, we are committed to expanding opportunity and empowering every student to achieve their full potential, regardless of their background.”

U.S. News’ methodology on SMI compares the six-year graduation rates of students who receive the Pell Grant, which is usually given to families with annual incomes below $50,000, and the graduation rates of their peers who do not receive Pell. Economically disadvantaged students are statistically less likely than others to finish college, but this ranking demonstrates UWG’s strength in helping students overcome barriers.

The success of UWG students is also evident in career outcomes. A recent report by the University System of Georgia stated UWG undergraduates earn $1.4 million more over their lifetime compared to workers with only a high school diploma. That dollar amount increases with each subsequent degree earned, as well.

Johnson has described the success of UWG students as a “no-excuse” priority for him as president.

“Our students’ success is our highest priority – not just while they’re here, but for the rest of their lives,” he said. “We will continue to build a university where every graduate is prepared to uplift their families, contribute to their communities and thrive in a changing world.”
