We’d like to share a brief update on our ongoing efforts to improve the city’s water system and reduce water loss across our community.
Like many municipalities, our city experiences a certain level of water loss in the distribution system. This can be due to a variety of factors, including aging infrastructure, minor leaks, and normal operational usage. Nationally, smaller municipal water systems average around 20% water loss, primarily due to aging infrastructure. The City of Temple falls within this average range.
While some water loss is expected in any water system, we recognize the importance of keeping it to a minimum—for both environmental and economic reasons.
Over the past several months, our team has been actively assessing the situation and implementing targeted improvements. We’re using a combination of updated monitoring practices, system audits, and infrastructure maintenance to better track and manage our water resources.
Here’s how we’re taking action:
Improved Detection: We’re using newer technologies and tools to identify areas where water may be escaping the system more quickly and accurately.
Ongoing Maintenance: Regular maintenance and timely repairs are helping us stay ahead of potential issues.
Strategic Upgrades: Some parts of the system are being upgraded to more efficient, durable materials that help prevent future loss.
Currently, we are staying well within our allotted water supply from CCWA, which allows us to adequately serve both our existing community and the new developments that have already been approved. However, in order to ensure water availability for future growth and development, we are proactively taking the following steps:
Tying into nearby water systems to create more flexibility and resilience during high-demand periods.
Constructing one or two additional water storage tanks to better manage peak-hour usage and ensure consistent supply.
Exploring options to receive additional water from CCWA, which would help support long-term expansion and reduce system strain.
In addition to planning for growth, we remain committed to working collaboratively with CCWA to meet their system demands while continuing to prioritize the needs of our residents.
We appreciate the community’s support as we carry out this important work. If you have questions or would like to learn more, don’t hesitate to reach out to the City Administrator and the Public Works Director.
