An archeological survey on the University Of West Georgia campus may have un-covered a hidden cemetery. Some hypotheses suggest the graves may belong to slaves.
UWG officials over the weekend did not confirm that part of the story, however UWG Communications Specialist Colton Campbell told WLBB Radio that UWG recently sponsored the survey as part of a comprehensive mapping project to gather information and gain a cultural understanding of the Bonner Plantation property that is now the UWG campus. He says after several rounds of ground and soil testing, the southern research historical preservation consultants group identified anomalies in the soil suggesting the presence of a possible cemetery.
UWG will continue to explore and verify findings and to work with the descendant community in the exploration of this historical project.
