The GSP preliminary details of the crash are as follows:

A Carrollton Police officer, wearing reflective gear, was in the intersection of GA 1 at a private drive (Ingles shopping center) directing traffic while electrical work in the area disabled the traffic signal at this intersection. 

A Kia Sorento traveling south drove from the right lane into the left lane then into the southbound left turn lane and into the intersection where it struck the officer. 

The Kia continued into the northbound lane of travel and struck a northbound Chrysler 200.  The Kia then steered to the right side of the roadway onto a sidewalk where it came to final rest facing west. 

The officer was transported by air to Kennestone Hospital with serious injuries. 

The two drivers were transported to Tanner Carrollton with minor injuries. 

The driver of the Kia was reportedly experiencing a medical event which caused her to lose control. 

Traffic was diverted in both directions during the investigation and the roadway was reopened at 1654.
