Georgia Department of Transportation announced plans for maintenance of bridges in Douglas County which extend over I-20. This will include the Liberty Road bridge in Villa Rica. In addition to normal maintenance, a process called bridge jacking will be done.
We are going to get to observe a process called bridge jacking and what that entails is GDOT has established a new minimum clearance statewide. For bridges that dont meet that requirement, they are going to be raised, said Villa Rica City Manager, Tom Barber addressing city council on Tuesday.
The process takes from 30 to 45 days and will be done during the summer either this year or in 2019. Ramps accessing the interstate will still be opened during the process but the bridge will be shut down. Commute times may increase as drivers find ways around the bridge.
Carroll County bridges over I-20 will also see similar construction begin within the next five years, according to GDOT.
