The University of West Georgia is steeped in traditions, and a defining moment of every graduate’s experience is crossing the stage at Commencement.

That tradition was reborn this week, as a record number of graduates joined the legion of alumni (now more than 81,000 Wolves strong) who have been shaped by the institution. On Friday and Saturday, UWG conferred approximately 2,000 degrees, including an honorary doctorate, in the Spring 2025 Commencement ceremonies across five events.

“As we reflect on the impact of your achievements, it’s important to recognize that each of you has a unique story that contributes to the success of the entire class,” said Dr. Ashwani Monga, UWG’s interim president. “Remember that, as you go forward, the knowledge, skills and experiences you’ve gained here have prepared you not just to succeed but also thrive.”

The ceremonies capped off an academic year rich with accolades for the university and its community, with record-breaking enrollment, the launch of Division I athletics, the establishment of two new colleges, and earning top rankings in social mobility and a spot in the top 10 of the largest colleges of education in the country.

Chase Williams ’25, Student Government Association president, spoke from the perspective of a student and a fellow graduate, as he earned his bachelor’s degree in political science.

“The Class of 2025 has experienced a wide array of challenges and changes throughout our time in college,” he said. “As we go forward from this moment today, we must remember: UWG is a special community that will forever be here to support us in all that we do going forward.”

Christopher Sanders ’03, chair of the UWG Alumni Association Board of Directors, welcomed graduates as fellow alumni and advised them on the value of community.

“The world doesn’t just need degrees; it needs dreamers who act, bold thinkers and compassionate leaders,” he shared. “As you rise, don’t forget to lift. Share your wins. Use your voice for something that matters because success means more when it’s shared. Don’t lose sight of the roses while you’re focused on the mountain tops – the friendships, the mentors and the people who showed up when it mattered.”

And before the new graduates began their lives as alumni, Monga reminded them of the memories that made their journey uniquely West.

“As you move into the next chapter of your lives, I hope you carry with you the traditions that have defined your time at UWG – the shared experiences, spirited moments and deep connections that unite and bind generations of Wolves together,” he concluded. “Be bold, stay curious and embrace the opportunities to make a difference in your communities and beyond.”
