On Monday, local first responders and a family member safely talked a man down with alleged mental health issues who climbed atop the roof of a medical office building adjacent to Higgins General Hospital in Bremen. This was after a dramatic scene that created concern in the city of Bremen for approximately an hour.
At approximately 12:25 PM on Monday, representatives from Tanner Health System, the Bremen Police Department, Bremen Fire Rescue, the Haralson County SheriffÂ’s office, Ambucare EMS and the Carrollton Fire Department were called to the scene.
Bremen Fire Chief Jason Hurley:
“The subject was approximately 45 feet in the air. We requested latter trucks from the Carrollton Fire Department and Ladder 21 responded and placed inside the bucket, two firefighters and a family member of the victim to help coerce and talk him down. After approximately 45 minute conversation with the individual, the family member was able to coerce him to get into the bucket and lower him to the ground.”
Hurley said first responders took several pre-cautions in case the individual could not be coaxed to coming down safely, “On the side that the subject was standing, we utilized the aerial truck which does take some special training in operations to make sure that we can reach where the victims are located. On the opposite side of the roof, we rigged up a rope system, should anything happen or should we be able to get him close enough to put hands on him or if something declined in the conversation.”
Hurley said first responders also reached out to the City of Atlanta to request use of airbags to be placed on ground below the scene. The situation was resolved before those safety measures arrived.
