In the early morning hours of Tuesday, August 26, at approximately 2:07 a.m., Carroll County Fire Rescue was dispatched to Daniel Road in response to a reported residential structure fire.
While responding, units were advised that one occupant had safely exited the residence and was seeking shelter at a neighbor’s home, while a second individual was believed to still be inside.
Upon arrival, Engine 3 crews encountered a residence fully engulfed in flames. Firefighters immediately conducted a scene size-up and began firefighting operations. Additional units arrived shortly after and assisted with establishing a reliable water supply and initiating a defensive attack. Within approximately 30 minutes, the fire was brought under control.
A 72-year-old male occupant was treated on scene and transported by West Georgia Ambulance to an Atlanta-area trauma center for possible smoke inhalation, where he continues to receive treatment. Tragically, a 66-year-old female occupant was later located inside the residence and pronounced deceased at the scene by the Carroll County Coroner’s Office.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation by Carroll County Fire Rescue.
update: The deceased has been identified by family as 66-year-old Barbara Neal, though official confirmation from the GBI lab is still pending. Her husband, 72-year-old James Neal, remains hospitalized at Grady.
