Deputies Fired Upon During Domestic Dispute; Suspect in Custody

Carroll County, GA – On September 25, 2025, at approximately 7:42 a.m., Carroll County Sheriff’s Office Deputies were dispatched to a domestic dispute on Barnes Road. Prior to arrival, dispatch advised that a male subject inside the residence was armed with a firearm and had made threats toward a female victim.

Upon arrival, deputies tactically positioned themselves away from the residence. The female victim was able to exit the home and make contact with responding deputies. A 66-year-old male, later identified as John McCormick, briefly stepped outside but immediately returned inside after seeing deputies on scene.

As deputies attempted to further investigate and interview the victim, McCormick discharged a shotgun from the home in the deputies’ direction. The projectiles struck multiple Sheriff’s Office vehicles that were located at a tactical distance from the residence. Deputies quickly reacted to being fired upon, extracting the female victim to safety and securing a perimeter around the residence.

The Carroll County Sheriff’s Office S.W.A.T. Team was activated and responded to the scene. After contact was made with McCormick by phone and a brief standoff ensued, he ultimately surrendered to the S.W.A.T. team without further incident.Sheriff Terry Langley stated, “We are very grateful that no one was injured during this extremely dangerous situation. This incident is a stark reminder that no call is ever routine in law enforcement. Our deputies displayed tremendous bravery and professionalism under fire.”

John McCormick, age 66, was taken into custody and is facing multiple charges including:
5 counts of Aggravated Assault on Law Enforcement
1 count of Aggravated Assault (Non-Law Enforcement)
5 counts of Interference with Government Property
1 count of Terroristic Threats and Acts

McCormick was transported to the Carroll County Jail, where he remains in custody.
The Carroll County Sheriff’s Office commends the quick actions of all deputies, dispatchers, and S.W.A.T. personnel that helped bring this dangerous situation to a safe resolution.
