On September 26, 2025, a Carroll County jury found Brenton Dale Chase guilty of two counts of Criminal Attempt – Murder, Aggravated Assault on a Law Enforcement Officer, Fleeing and Attempting to Elude, two counts of Interference with Government Property, Criminal Damage to Property in the Second Degree, and two counts of Possession of a Firearm During the Commission of a Felony. The investigation was led by Sgt. Tyler North with the Carroll County Sheriff’s Office.
The case was prosecuted by Assistant District Attorney Zach Baity and Senior Assistant District Attorney Jared Parrish with assistance from Katelynn Culbreath, Co-Director of Victim Services.
At trial, the facts showed that on August 22, 2024, Chase was driving a stolen Dodge Ram when he attempted to strike a Whitesburg Police Department vehicle, being driven by Chief Keith Creel. A chase ensued and the Carroll County Sheriff’s Office arrived to assist in searching for Chase.
Chase attempted to murder two Carroll County Sheriffs Office deputies by firing a shotgun aimed at the deputies while in their patrol vehicles. Fortunately, the deputies were not physically injured. Law enforcement, including members of the Carrollton Police Department, eventually located Chase nearby and provided life-saving measures to prevent a methamphetamine drug overdose.
We commend Chief Keith Creel, Sgt. Carson Cornell and Deputy George McLain for their courageous efforts not only on the evening of August 22, 2024, but also on the witness stand when they communicated to the jury what they faced that night.
This case serves as another example of the coordination and assistance between multiple agencies in Carroll County who work tirelessly every single day to protect our community.
On November 12, 2025, Honorable Judge Erica Tisinger sentenced Brenton Dale Chase to 125 years to serve in the Georgia Department of Corrections; the 125 years to serve is not parole-eligible and rather shall be served day-for-day.
