CCS SETS ESTIMATED MILLAGE RATE

written by: Laurie Fleck, Director of Public Relations

CARROLLTON, GA — Carrollton City Schools Board of Education approved an estimated millage rate during its regular meeting on Tuesday, June 3. The proposed rate is the same as last year’s at 17.866 mills.

“The rate we set is a conservative estimate since we do not have the final figures from the tax commissioner,” said Jenny Greba, director of finance. “ Once we receive the official numbers from the county, the board will review the information before making a final decision later this summer.”

A millage rate is the tax rate applied to the assessed value of taxable property.

A new Georgia law that went into effect Jan. 1 now requires local governing bodies to set an estimated millage rate before receiving final tax digest numbers. The rollback rate, calculated each year by the Carroll County Tax Commissioner, is intended to keep property tax revenue the same as the previous year, accounting for inflation and reassessments.

Dr. Mark Albertus, superintendent, shared the district’s approach to determining an appropriate rate for the school system.

“When setting the millage rate, our focus is to be good stewards of public funds while delivering the quality of education our families expect,” Albertus said. “We understand that any tax decision affects our community, and we work hard to strike the right balance, ensuring every dollar supports safe learning environments, high academic standards, and opportunities that help our students succeed.”

If a governing body chooses not to adopt the rollback rate, the state requires it to advertise the change as a tax increase and host three public hearings before final approval.
