CARROLLTON, GA — Carrollton High School hosted a unique event to celebrate Georgia Reads Day on September 22, an educational initiative from the State Department of Education to encourage reading among students.
Georgia Reads Day is a statewide initiative that celebrates the love of reading and promotes literacy. It is a special day dedicated to sharing the joy of reading and growing strong, confident readers together. Throughout the month, Georgia Reads promotes activities that build excitement around books and encourage students to develop a lifelong love of reading.
Mrs. Stephanie Holloway, media specialist at CHS, planned engaging activities to get students involved in Georgia Reads Day.
“I hope that this event sparked the love of reading and encouraged kids to read, talk about what they read, and have fun reading,” said Mrs. Holloway. “It is proven by science that if you read, you are a better communicator, speller, and reader. Reading promotes all of these vital skills that our students need.”
Held in the CHS library, the event brought together students for a literacy celebration featuring interactive reading activities, a social media contest, and complimentary food and snacks to create a fun and engaging atmosphere. Holloway invited English teachers to nominate two of their strongest readers to visit the media center during their lunch block. At the event, students were treated to lunch and snacks as a reward for their dedication throughout the semester. Featured activities included “speed dating” with a book, where students rotated books every minute to sample books and discover new interests, and a social media contest encouraging students to post their favorite book while tagging Georgia Reads and CHS.
Attendees enjoyed exploring new genres, sharing that the dedicated time to reading for fun piqued their interests and led them to check out more books.
“Georgia Reads Day was so much fun. I was able to explore new genres out of my comfort zone and overall, increased my love for reading,” said CHS sophomore Eliana Neil, “I hope to attend the Georgia Reads Day next year too!”
Looking forward, CHS will continue to provide innovative opportunities to promote literacy and student engagement.
