On December 4, 2025, the Carroll County Sheriff’s Office was notified that a juvenile student at Villa Rica Middle School reported an inappropriate act involving their teacher, 54-year-old Rico Thompson, which allegedly occurred on campus.
Upon receiving the report, the School Resource Officer (SRO) assigned to the school was immediately made aware of the allegations. An extensive investigation was initiated simultaneously by the Carroll County Sheriff’s Office, ensuring a swift and coordinated response prioritizing the safety and well-being of every student on campus.
Through the course of this investigation, arrest warrants were obtained for Thompson for the offenses of Child Molestation, Enticing a Child for Indecent Purposes, Sexual Exploitation of Children, and Sexual Assault by Persons with Supervisory or Disciplinary Authority.
Superintendent Scott Cowart expressed appreciation for the rapid response and partnership between the school system and law enforcement, stating: “We appreciate the quick response and ongoing coordination with the Carroll County Sheriff’s Office,” Superintendent Scott Cowart said. “We have a wonderful relationship and open communication with local law enforcement agencies to ensure that our schools are a safe place for students and employees. In this case, we thank them again for their prompt action.”
The Carroll County Sheriff’s Office and the Carroll County School System remain committed to maintaining the highest standards of safety within all school environments. The presence of trained SROs on campus continues to play a critical role in ensuring that any concerns are addressed immediately and thoroughly, reinforcing a culture of protection and trust for students, families, and staff.
