If you’ve got it, haunt it.
Every fall, the spirit of community takes on a spooky twist at the University of West Georgia’s annual Safe Treat event. For one night – this year, it’s from 6-8 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 30, in The Village – students of all ages swap textbooks for costumes, transforming campus into a wonderland of candy and connection.
To most kids, Halloween means candy. But to those who come to Safe Treat, it means exploring a campus filled with superheroes, witches, and smiling college students, faculty and staff who hand over treats rather than tricks.
For UWG senior Lauren O’Bryan, this will be her second year participating in the event. O’Bryan said she’s always on the lookout for new ways to get involved on campus and collaborate with the community, and she feels Safe Treat fosters a sense of connection between the university and Carrollton.
This year, O’Bryan, a mass communications major, will act as student photographer to experience the festivities from a media standpoint.
“Safe Treat is a signature event that the community looks forward to every year,” she stated. “It’s such a joy getting to serve both the school and the community. There’s nothing better than seeing the kids’ faces light up when they win candy or see a college student dressed as their favorite character.”
Dr. Andre Fortune, vice president of student affairs, said the university is proud to offer a safe, family-friendly space where children can experience the fun of Halloween surrounded by caring students, faculty and staff.
“Safe Treat is one of our most cherished holiday traditions because it truly captures what it means to be part of the UWG community,” he said. “It’s a reminder that UWG isn’t just a place to learn – it’s a place to connect, give back and celebrate the spirit of togetherness that makes our university family so special.
“In addition to being of service to the community, we hope these are future Wolves exploring their campus early,” he added.
O’Bryan said events like this encourage her and her peers to serve, interact, and build relationships with people who make up the City of Carrollton.
“It’s a reminder of how little moments strengthen the bridge between UWG and our community,” she concluded. “Safe Treat is a great reminder that our Pack extends to the surrounding communities. It showcases how our students, faculty and staff value fellowship that turns into a positive impact on both the university and the community.”
