CARROLLTON, GA — A Carrollton High School teacher who has been coaching speech and debate for more than three decades was selected to receive an Outstanding Performing Arts Educator Award from the National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS).
Richard Bracknell has been honored several times for his accomplishments as a debate coach at Carrollton High School. He has received the Georgia Forensic Coaches Association Debate Coach of the Year honor twice — most recently in 2022, was inducted into the GFCA Coaches Hall of Fame in 2001, is a A Six Diamond Coach in the National Speech and Debate Association, and a Key Coach of the Barkley Forum at Emory University.
Outside of debate, he has been named STAR Teacher of the Year by the STAR Students who chose him more than any other CHS teacher, at 13 times.
CHS Prinicpal Ian Lyle said Bracknell is worthy of the NFHS award.
“I am so appreciative of Coach Bracknell’s influence that will carry our students not only through debate, but through life,” he said. “He is very deserving of this award.”
