Charges Filed in Downtown Carrollton Fight

On Monday, Carrollton police cited evidence from available surveillance video around Adamson Square when they issued arrest warrants for three of the individuals allegedly involved in a violent altercation that occurred one week ago and resulted in one man requiring surgery.

Investigators so far have proof of only two men throwing punches in the altercation. Both of those men face charges.

CPD Captain, Shannon Cantrell believes there is enough evidence on video to support that the victim, Austin Gunter, did play a role in provoking the fight. He is charged with affray. Cantrell said based on evidence so far revealed, it appears that both parties are at fault.

“All subjects involved came into a verbal argument on the square. At one point in time the victim appears to have ripped his shirt off in a provoking manner to fight the other male subjects. At some point in time they continued to argue and disappeared into the alley behind the Alley Cat Restaurant,” said Cantrell. “That camera angle there, you are able to catch where they continued to argue about something. We believe the altercation occurred in the back parking lot but it was not on camera.”

19-year old, Jarrett Whitley of Whitesburg turned himself in to the Carrollton Police Department late Monday. He is charged with affray and aggravated battery. Cantrell said the charge was elevated because the beating did permanent damage to the victim with extensive broken facial bones.

“We are aware that there were several witnesses on the side walk that were not part of this but saw what went on. We just do not know who they are. If anybody saw something reach out to us and shed some light on it a little more,” Cantrell told WLBB.

Bond had not been set for Whitley as of Tuesday morning.

The third person facing charges in this incident is 26-year old, Silas Whitley of Carrollton. HeÂ’ll be charged with criminal trespass after police said he picked up GunterÂ’s Carhart vest and threw it away in a trash can on the square.

Police say the investigation continues and more charges are possible.
