“Election Wrap” For Tuesday Nov. 5 Municipal Elections

Carroll County voters elected a woman to serve as County Commission Chairman for the first time, earlier this year. On Tuesday, voters in the county-seat elected a woman to serve as mayor for the first time, as well.

Former Probate Judge Betty Cason will be sworn in as Carrollton’s new mayor in January of 2020 after collecting 61-percent of the total votes cast—defeating incumbent Walt Hollingsworth by more than 20-percent.

Carrollton’s Ward 3 City Councilman Jim Watters will serve his third consecutive term beginning in 2020. He avoided a run-off election by winning 60-percent of the vote over three challengers. Tina Shockley came in second in that race collecting 22-percent of the vote.

Bob Uglam defeats Jason Marlowe and Jason Westbrook for the Ward Four City Council seat.  Uglam received 58-percent of the vote. Marlowe came in second with 28-percent.

Brett Ledbetter won the special election to complete the unexpired term of formr Ward 2 Councilman, Rory Wojcik. Ledbetter collected 54-percent of the vote over Dr. Brent Harris. Because the ward two race was a special election, Ledbetter could be sworn in to office as early as this month.

In Villa Rica, Gil McDougal will be sworn in as mayor in January. He defeated two other candidates by collecting close to 52-percent of the total votes from residents living in both Carroll and Douglas counties. Dominique Conteh was second in the race with 32-percent of the votes.

In the election for McDougal’s former Ward Four City Council seat, Michael Young came out on top. He defeated two candidates by collecting 56-percent of the votes.

Jim Chaffin was re-elected as mayor of Bowdon. He defeated challenger Logan Jackson (82-percent to 18-percent).

Temple City Councilwoman Hiley Miller was re-elected in Ward Three, collecting 4-fifths of the votes in that race.

In Buchanan: Teresa Barger defeated Greg Lane for a seat on city council; and, Buchanan voters approved a Sunday alcohol sales referendum.
